Xiong Yuezhi is Vice President of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS), Director of the Academic Committee, Research Fellow of the Institute of History. He is also the tutor of doctoral candidates at East China Normal University, a commissioner of Shanghai Politics Conference, and the deputy Chairman of Shanghai History Academy and History Chorography Academy. He obtained the M.A from East China Normal University in 1981. His research fields are Chinese modern history and thought & culture history, social history and urban history, etc. He has presided over many important research tasks such as “Shanghai General History”, “The Urban Culture under the Heterogeneity Cultures Intertexture: The Study of Social Life in Modern Shanghai”, “The Study of Social Life in Modern Shanghai”, “Cyclopedia of Old Shanghai”, “Shanghai City Spirits”, etc. Three of his books Chinese Modern Democracy Thought History, The Dissemination of West Learning in China and the Society in Late Qing, The Comment and Biography about Feng Gui-fen were awarded Excellent Book by Shanghai Philosophy and Social Sciences. Moreover, he is the author, co-author or editor-in-chief of more than 20 books, as well as the author of more than 100 articles, in which The Image and Identity of the Shanghainese, An overview of the dissemination of Western learning in late-Qing society, China, and Degrees of Familiarity with the West in Late Qing Society have been translated into English.
